Vehicle comparison

Party bus vs. limousine vs. Sprinter vs. shuttle

The decision usually comes down to space and how the group wants to spend the ride. A limousine is elegant and seated; a party bus is a club on wheels where riders can stand, dance, and move between the front and back; Sprinters are nimble for 10 to 14; shuttles and coaches move large groups, luggage, and anyone who needs a lift for the least cost per seat.

How to choose the right vehicle for a Chicago group

Four questions settle it: headcount, how the group wants to spend the ride, how long the route really takes, and what the date does to the minimum.

How many riders, counting everyone?

Vehicles cannot be loaded past seated capacity, so count chaperones, photographers, and the friend who always says yes at the last minute. The median Chicago group is 15 riders and is quoted a vehicle 4 to 6 seats larger than its headcount; that margin is what makes coats, coolers, and gift bags fit. For 15 to 20 riders the 22-passenger party bus is the default; for 21 to 30 a 28- or 30-passenger bus; above 30 a 34- to 45-passenger party bus or a 48-passenger shuttle.

Will people want to stand up?

If yes, it is a party bus: wraparound seating around an open floor, LED and laser lighting, Bluetooth sound, and a bar area with ice and water. If the group wants a seated, formal arrival (weddings, prom photos, anniversaries), a stretch limousine or a limo-style Sprinter fits. If the trip is about moving people, luggage, or anyone who needs a lift, a forward-facing shuttle or coach does it for the least cost per seat.

How long does the route actually take?

Bachelor and bachelorette parties average 4.1 hours, birthdays 4.6, concerts 4.9, and game days 6.5. Suburban pickups west of the city add 45 to 75 minutes each way on a weekend evening. Three or more stops usually turns a 4-hour plan into 5; booking the fifth hour up front costs $210 on a 22-passenger bus, while hoping to extend mid-trip often is not possible.

What does the date do to the minimum?

Friday and Saturday evenings carry a 4-hour minimum. Sunday through Thursday, and weekend trips ending before 5 p.m., qualify for the 3-hour rate, which is the easiest way to save. Every Saturday in March, April, and May is prom season with a 6-hour minimum and prom pricing about 26% above the regular 6-hour rate, for any event type booked that day.

Booking data

Which vehicles Chicago groups actually request

Real patterns from Chicago quote requests, so you can see where your group fits before you compare sizes.

  • The most-quoted Chicago vehicle, the 22-passenger party bus, had a median quote of about $1,560 with quotes ranging from roughly $1,340 to $2,220 depending on hours and date.

    Chicago quote requests, 2026

  • Chicago rates step up roughly $120 to $280 per size tier: 22 passengers $1,340, 24 passengers $1,460, 28 passengers $1,628, 30 passengers $1,940, and 34 passengers $2,060 for 4 hours.

    Published Chicago rate card

  • Party buses are the only category where riders can stand, dance, and move between the front and back; the party buses in the Chicago lineup have heat and air conditioning.

    Booking policy

  • Bar crawls are about 4% of Chicago requests but skew large: the median bar-crawl group is 16 to 17 riders, which pushes most of them into a 20-plus passenger party bus.

    Chicago quote requests, 2026

  • Prom groups in Chicago average about 23 riders but the median is 18: a handful of very large school groups pull the average up, so most prom parties fit a 20- to 24-passenger vehicle.

    Chicago quote requests, 2026

  • Stretch limousines seat 8 to 20 in Chicago and are quoted most often for weddings, proms, and anniversaries where a seated, formal arrival matters more than a dance floor.

    Booking policy

Percentages describe quote requests and reservations handled through Chicago Party Bus Fun and are rounded. They describe planning patterns, not guarantees of availability or price. Your written quote is the final word on vehicle, hours, and total cost. How these figures are compiled.

How to Book Your Party Bus

Four steps. Most Chicago groups finish them about 30 days before the event.

Definitely lives up to their name! We used them for our bachelorette/bachelor parties and our wedding and will be using them again. They were absolutely great! Even let me extend an hour when I decided my bachelorette party was too much fun and I wasn't ready to go yet!! I would absolutely recommend them and do to everyone!!

Fleet and pricing questions

Straight answers from the Chicago booking desk

What is the difference between a party bus and a limousine?
Space and experience. A limousine is elegant and seated: leather seats, a privacy partition, mood lighting, a mini-bar with ice and water, and a formal arrival, but riders stay seated and larger groups feel it. A party bus is a club on wheels: wraparound seating around an open floor, LED and laser lighting, a Bluetooth sound system, a bar area, and room to stand, dance, and move between the front and back. In Chicago the two are priced the same at 20 to 22 passengers, so the choice is about how your group wants to spend the ride.
When should I choose a Sprinter, shuttle, or coach instead of a party bus?
Executive Sprinters (10 to 14 forward-facing seats, Wi-Fi where equipped) are the default for corporate and airport groups. Limo-style Sprinters (about 14, perimeter seating, lighting, and sound) suit smaller celebrations that want the party-bus feel in a vehicle that fits downtown streets. Shuttle buses (32 to 48 seats) and coaches (up to about 56) are the practical choice for wedding guest loops, conventions, church groups, luggage, and any rider who needs a wheelchair lift or low-step entry. They are also the least expensive per seat.
How many people fit on a party bus?
Chicago party buses in the lineup seat 22, 24, 28, 30, 34, 36, 38, and 45. Stretch limousines seat 8 to 20, Sprinters 10 to 14, shuttle buses 32 to 48, and coaches up to about 56. Vehicles cannot be loaded past their seated capacity, so count chaperones, photographers, and late additions. The median Chicago group is 15 riders and three out of four groups are 20 or fewer, which is why the 22-passenger party bus is the most-requested vehicle.
How much does each additional hour cost?
Each vehicle on the rate card has a fixed hourly increment. For example, a 22-passenger party bus is $1,340 for 4 hours, $1,550 for 5, and $1,760 for 6, so each added hour is $210. An 8-passenger limousine adds $150 per hour and a 45-passenger party bus adds $480. If your contract shows a package price, the overtime rate is simply the total divided by the hours reserved.
What is included in the price?
The quoted price covers the vehicle for the reserved hours, a professional and commercially insured driver, fuel, taxes, and the driver's gratuity. Party buses and stretch limousines also come with ice and bottled water in the bar area. Extra hours are billed at the contract hourly rate, and mileage adjustments apply only to trips well outside Chicagoland, which the written quote will say up front. There is no tip to calculate on the night of the event.
Can I upgrade or downgrade the vehicle after booking?
Changing vehicle size after reserving is difficult because the sizes around yours are usually already booked for the same night. Confirm the headcount before signing, and choose a vehicle 2 to 4 seats above the count if riders will have coats, coolers, or gift bags. The median Chicago group is quoted 4 to 6 seats above its headcount for exactly this reason.
Do you have wheelchair-accessible vehicles?
Yes. Shuttle buses and coach buses are the accessible options, with wheelchair lifts and low-step entry available on request; party buses and stretch limousines have high steps and no lift. Tell us about walkers, wheelchairs, or any mobility need when you request the quote so the right vehicle is assigned and the pickup point has curb access.
Do the buses have karaoke, TVs, HDMI, or room for a DJ?
A Bluetooth and AUX sound system and LED or laser lighting are standard on the party buses and stretch limos in the lineup. Karaoke systems, gaming consoles, TV screens with HDMI input, and power for DJ equipment vary by vehicle, so tell us exactly what you want to plug in before booking and the right bus will be assigned. Fewer than 1% of groups ask about screens; almost everyone just brings a phone with a playlist.
What is the minimum rental time for a party bus in Chicago?
Friday and Saturday evening rentals have a 4-hour minimum. A 3-hour minimum is available Sunday through Thursday and for Friday or Saturday trips that finish before 5 p.m. Because Chicago publishes prom-season pricing, every Saturday in March, April, and May carries a 6-hour minimum for all event types, not just proms. You can always book more hours than the minimum, and 58% of Chicago groups book exactly 4.
