A river valley town: the 9th Street bridge, Route 171 and I-355
Lockport's geography is older than its roads. The historic downtown sits on the valley floor beside the Illinois & Michigan Canal, the Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Des Plaines River, with the east side of town climbing the bluff above it. State Street, which is Route 171, runs north and south through downtown. Ninth Street, Route 7, is the main crossing over the waterways toward Crest Hill, Romeoville and Weber Road, and because river crossings are scarce in this stretch of Will County, that bridge approach backs up at both rush hours and again on Saturday afternoons.
For Chicago trips, most Lockport groups no longer fight their way west to I-55. The better route is east on Route 7 (159th Street) to I-355, then north to I-55 and into the city. It adds tollway miles and removes a lot of signals. From the historic district, figure ten to fifteen minutes to the I-355 ramp and 45 to 70 minutes to the Loop overall. Groups bound for Oak Brook, Schaumburg or O'Hare stay on I-355 the whole way north.

Rehearsal dinners, canal-side receptions and fall wedding season
Lockport's 19th-century limestone buildings have made it a wedding town. The Gaylord Building, a restored canal warehouse from the 1830s, and the Public Landing restaurant beside it host rehearsal dinners and receptions, and Lincoln Landing, the park along the canal, is a favourite for portraits. Add area banquet halls, golf clubs in neighbouring Lemont and Homer Glen, and churches up on the hill, and a typical Lockport wedding day involves three or four addresses within a few miles, none of them with much parking.
That is the case for a shuttle. Guests leave cars at the hotel, and a 26 passenger shuttle bus or similar runs the loop. Season matters as much as size. In that same data, 45% of wedding inquiries were for fall dates and 17% for September alone. State Street evenings, Old Canal Days and nights that stay local
Downtown Lockport has quietly built a good evening scene: restaurants, taverns and a few newer spots in the old commercial blocks along State Street, with the canal a block away. For a birthday or anniversary group, a common plan is dinner in Lockport, then a short ride to the Joliet casinos fifteen minutes southwest, or up Route 171 to downtown Lemont. Couples celebrating a milestone sometimes skip the big bus altogether; a 10 passenger limousine suits an anniversary dinner with two other couples.
Lockport's summer festival, Old Canal Days, traditionally takes over the downtown streets in June with a parade, carnival and music. Check the current year's dates and street-closure map before planning a pickup anywhere near State Street that weekend, because the closures are extensive and a bus will need to load several blocks out. The same goes for cruise nights and other downtown events: fun to attend, tricky to drive through.

Homes on the east-side hill
Older streets climbing the bluff are narrower and steeper than the newer subdivisions farther east, and winter parking makes them tighter. Give the exact address; the driver may ask to load at the nearest wider cross street.
The Metra station
Lockport's Heritage Corridor station downtown has only a few weekday rush-hour trains, so it is a landmark more than a transit link. It can work as a meeting point, but commuter lot rules apply and festival weekends close the streets around it.
