Expressways are fine; the last half mile into a nightlife district is what takes time.

These are planning ranges for a large vehicle, not live traffic. Check a map app for your exact addresses at the same day and hour a week ahead, and let the driver choose the route on the night.

How to use the chicago route time estimator

A range is more honest than a single number, and it is what you need to plan around. The same leg can take 30 minutes late at night and 90 in the weekday rush. If you plan on the low end, a dinner reservation or a first pitch gets missed. If you know the high end, you can move the pickup earlier or request more reserved time while it is still a simple change.

  1. Pick a drive leg from the first menu. There are 16 options covering city neighborhoods, both airports, the stadiums, and suburbs such as Evanston, Oak Brook, Schaumburg, Naperville, and Rosemont. Each leg works in either direction.

  2. Pick when you will be driving it: early morning or late night, weekday midday, weekday rush (7–9:30 AM, 3:30–7 PM), Friday or Saturday evening (the default), or a game, concert, or festival nearby.

  3. Set the loading time at the start of this leg with the slider. It runs from 0 to 30 minutes in steps of 5 and starts at 10.

  4. Read the three rows: the driving range, the boarding time, and the bold "Block out in your schedule" range, which is driving plus boarding.

  5. Read the short note under the rows. It changes with the traffic setting and explains what usually causes the delay in that window.

How the ranges are built

Each leg has a baseline low and high driving time for a large vehicle on quiet roads. River North to Wrigleyville, for example, has a baseline of 18 to 28 minutes, and the Loop to O'Hare has 30 to 45. The traffic setting then multiplies each end. Early morning or late night leaves the baseline alone. Weekday midday multiplies by 1.15 and 1.3. Friday or Saturday evening uses 1.25 and 1.6. Weekday rush uses 1.5 and 2. A game, concert, or festival nearby uses 1.5 and 2.2, the widest spread.

The low figure is rounded to the nearest five minutes and the high figure is always rounded up to the next five. That asymmetry is on purpose: if the estimate is going to be wrong, it is better for the high end to be slightly too cautious.

These are planning ranges, not live traffic, and they are not a promise from any operator. They exist so that the numbers you type into the event timeline planner are defensible. The right workflow is to use the range to draft the schedule, then check a map app for your exact addresses at the same day and hour a week ahead, and finally let the driver choose the route on the night.

Weekday rush and the expressways

The rush setting doubles the high end because Chicago expressways do that. The Kennedy (I-90/94) between downtown and O'Hare is the leg most groups underestimate. The Eisenhower (I-290) toward Oak Brook and the western suburbs, the Stevenson (I-55) toward Midway, and the Dan Ryan south of the Loop all slow heavily in the same windows, roughly 7 to 9:30 AM and 3:30 to 7 PM.

The note attached to this setting makes a practical point: a pickup 30 minutes earlier often saves more than 30 minutes. Leaving the Loop for Schaumburg at 3:00 PM and leaving at 4:30 PM are very different drives. If your event has a fixed start, such as a corporate dinner in Rosemont or a rehearsal in Naperville, run the leg on the rush setting and work backward from the high end.

Airport runs deserve the most margin because a missed flight cannot be fixed by texting the restaurant. For a group transfer to O'Hare or Midway, plan on the high figure, then add the airline's recommended arrival window on top.

Weekend evenings and the last half mile

Friday or Saturday evening is the default setting because that is when most group outings happen. Across 65,687 non-spam inquiry records for 2024–2025 event dates, 81% of requested event dates fell on Friday or Saturday. That figure is from a national dataset of quote requests across the booking network this site belongs to, so it describes inquiry patterns broadly and not Chicago rides specifically.

On weekend nights the expressways mostly move. The delay is at the end of the leg. River North, the West Loop and Fulton Market, Wicker Park's main intersection, and the blocks around Clark and Addison in Wrigleyville all fill with rideshare pickups, valet lines, and pedestrians. A large vehicle cannot squeeze around a double-parked car the way a sedan can, so the final few blocks can take 10 minutes on their own.

Two habits help. First, pick a drop-off point a block or two from the door, on a wider street, and walk the rest. Second, keep consecutive stops within the same area when you can. River North to the West Loop has a baseline of only 8 to 15 minutes, so a River North and Fulton Market night spends far less time on the road than one that bounces between Wrigleyville and the South Loop. The Chicago nightlife guide groups districts with this in mind.

Games, concerts, and festivals change the math

The event setting has the highest top multiplier, 2.2, because distance stops being the main factor. When a game lets out at Wrigley Field, the United Center, Soldier Field, or Rate Field in Bridgeport, streets near the venue may be closed or directed one way by traffic control, and tens of thousands of people are on foot. Summer festivals in Grant Park, including Lollapalooza weekend, close downtown streets for days and push traffic onto the remaining routes.

This setting applies even when you are not attending the event. A dinner in the West Loop on a night the Bulls or Blackhawks play at the United Center will feel it on the Loop to United Center corridor. Before you lock a date, check the home schedules for the teams and the major venue calendars.

The tool's note for this setting suggests agreeing on a meeting point a few blocks away. That is the single most useful tactic. Staging rules for large vehicles near stadiums vary, so ask the operator where the vehicle can legally wait and get the pickup location in writing. For a full game itinerary with arrival and exit times, the game day planner builds the schedule around first pitch or kickoff.

Worked example

Worked example: Loop to O'Hare at rush hour versus late night

A group of 12 needs to get from a Loop hotel to O'Hare for a Thursday evening flight. The planner selects "Loop ↔ O'Hare Airport," which has a baseline of 30 to 45 minutes, and sets traffic to "Weekday rush." The low end becomes 30 × 1.5 = 45 minutes. The high end becomes 45 × 2 = 90 minutes. The driving row reads 45–90 min.

Twelve people with suitcases will not load in 10 minutes, so the planner moves the loading slider to 15. The "Block out in your schedule" row reads 60–105 min.

For comparison, switching the traffic menu to "Early morning or late night" returns the baseline, 30–45 min of driving and 45–60 min with loading. The same leg can cost 45 minutes more at the high end purely because of departure time.

Planning on the 105-minute figure, and wanting to be at the terminal two hours before a 7:30 PM flight, the group sets its hotel pickup for 3:45 PM and types 105 into the timeline planner as the leg length.

Chicago Route Time Estimator: questions and answers

Straight answers from the Chicago booking desk

My route is not in the list. What should I do?
Choose the closest match in distance and character. A Lincoln Park to Bucktown leg behaves like Gold Coast to Wicker Park. A Loop to Skokie leg is similar to Loop to Evanston. For anything far outside the list, look up the drive in a map app at your planned day and hour, then apply the same thinking: add margin for a large vehicle, add boarding time, and plan on the high end.
Are these times live or based on current traffic?
No. The estimator uses fixed baseline ranges and fixed multipliers for each time window. It does not know about today's crash on the Kennedy, a lane closure, or lake-effect snow. Closer to your date, check a map app for your actual addresses, and on the night let the driver pick the route based on real conditions.
Do large vehicles take the same routes a car would?
Not always. Buses and other large vehicles are restricted on parts of DuSable Lake Shore Drive and avoid some low viaducts and tight residential streets, so a lakefront shortcut your map app suggests may not be available. The baseline ranges already assume a large vehicle. Confirm routing with the operator instead of assuming, especially for legs along the lakefront to Navy Pier, the Museum Campus, or Hyde Park.
Which traffic setting should I use for a Sunday?
For most Sunday daytime driving, "Weekday midday" is a reasonable stand-in: steady traffic without a true rush. If a Bears home game is on at Soldier Field, or a street festival or race is scheduled, use the event setting for any leg near downtown or the lakefront.
How much does winter weather add?
The estimator has no weather setting, so adjust manually. In active snow or ice, moving up one traffic level is a fair approach: plan a late-night leg as if it were midday, and a weekend evening as if it were rush. Boarding also slows in winter because of coats, slush at the curb, and people waiting indoors until the last moment. Add 5 minutes to the loading slider from December through March.
How do I estimate a night with several legs?
Run the estimator once per leg, changing the traffic setting as the night moves on. A 5:30 PM first leg may be weekday rush while the 10 PM leg is a weekend evening. Write down the high "block out" figure for each. Then enter those drive times into the event timeline planner along with your stop lengths to get clock times and the total hours to request on your written quote.
Should I plan on the low number or the high number?
Plan fixed commitments on the high number and treat the low number as a bonus. Dinner reservations, ceremony start times, flights, and first pitch do not move. If the drive comes in short, the group gets extra time at the stop. If you planned on the low figure and the drive runs long, the delay carries through every later stop and can push the night past the hours you reserved.
