Where the Veterans Memorial Tollway ends: picking the right highway out

New Lenox has a rare luxury: a real choice of routes. I-355 begins, or ends, at I-80 on the west side of the village, and the I-80 interchange at US-30 (Lincoln Highway) sits near the centre of town. Which one your trip uses depends on where in the city you are going.

For the Loop, River North and the West Loop, the usual call is I-355 north to I-55. It is tolled, and it avoids the truck-heavy eastern stretch of I-80. For the South Loop, Soldier Field, Guaranteed Rate Field or Hyde Park, I-80 east to I-57 north and the Dan Ryan is often quicker, particularly on weekends. The thing to respect is I-80 itself. The corridor through Joliet and New Lenox has been in a multi-year rebuild, and between the work zones and the constant freight traffic it produces more unpredictable delays than any other road the village uses. Lincoln-Way prom, homecoming and a long spring calendar

New Lenox is home to two of the Lincoln-Way district's high schools, Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way West, with Lincoln-Way East a few miles away in Frankfort. Three large schools holding separate proms and homecomings mean the local calendar for school-dance transportation is long, and friend groups often include students from more than one school, which complicates dates.

The area around Silver Cross Hospital, at Route 6 and the I-355 interchange, has become New Lenox's newest commercial district, with medical offices, restaurants and lodging nearby. For weddings, that matters because out-of-town guests increasingly stay there or along I-80, while ceremonies and receptions are spread across churches, banquet halls and golf clubs in New Lenox, Mokena, Frankfort and Joliet.

A guest shuttle ties those together. The usual pattern is two departures from the hotel before the ceremony and two or three returns at night, the last one timed to the end of the reception.
