Weber Road, Route 53 and sharing the ramp with semis
Romeoville has two ways onto I-55: Weber Road on the west side and Route 53 (Independence Boulevard) via Bolingbrook on the east. Both work. The difference is what you share them with. Romeoville is one of the region's big logistics hubs, with distribution centres lining Weber Road, Taylor Road, Normantown Road and the I-55 frontage, and truck volume around shift changes is heavy. The Weber Road interchange was rebuilt as a diverging diamond, which moves traffic better than the old design, but the signals between Airport Road and the ramps still stack up in the late afternoon.
For an evening departure to Chicago, we tend to favour Route 53 for east-side and campus pickups and Weber for the newer subdivisions to the west. Either way, once the bus is on the Stevenson the Loop is 35 to 50 minutes away in normal conditions, with the I-294 merge as the usual trouble spot.
Going north or west, I-355 is five to ten minutes away through Bolingbrook, and it opens up Oak Brook, Schaumburg and O'Hare on tollway the whole way. Romeoville does have a Metra station on the Heritage Corridor, but that line runs only a few weekday rush-hour trains toward Union Station and back. It is a commuter tool, not a way home from a Saturday concert.
Lewis University: formals, athletics and graduation weekend
Lewis University's campus on Route 53 gives Romeoville something its neighbours lack: a steady calendar of student organization formals, athletic team travel, alumni events and commencement. Campus groups have different needs from a birthday party. A fraternity or club formal wants a 26 passenger party bus or two running to a banquet hall and back.
