Six casinos, three kinds of trip

Where you go decides almost everything else about a casino outing, so start with the map.

The short hop. Rivers Casino in Des Plaines sits near O'Hare, close to the Tri-State and the Kennedy. From the northwest suburbs it is practically next door, and from downtown it is an easy evening run outside of rush hour. Bally's Chicago is the city's own casino, in the River West area just northwest of downtown; because the operation started in a temporary home before its permanent building, confirm the current address and group entrance before you plan. These two are evening trips: dinner, a few hours on the floor, home by midnight.

The half-day. Hollywood Casino has properties in Aurora and Joliet, serving the western and southwestern suburbs; both have been investing in new facilities, so double-check the address you give us. Horseshoe Hammond is just across the Indiana line, off the Skyway and Indianapolis Boulevard, a quick run from the South Side and south suburbs and reachable from downtown in well under an hour when traffic cooperates.

The day trip. Four Winds in New Buffalo, Michigan, is roughly seventy-five miles around the bottom of the lake. Potawatomi Casino Hotel in Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley is about ninety miles up I-94. Both make a full day: late-morning departure, five or six hours on site, home after dark. Four Winds runs on Eastern time, an hour ahead of Chicago, which matters for dinner reservations and show tickets.

Friends on a party bus, clubs on a coach

Casino groups come in two very different flavors, and they should not rent the same vehicle.

The first is the celebration: a birthday, a bachelor weekend warm-up, a friend group's annual tradition. These tend to be bigger than a typical night out, because a casino trip is easy to say yes to. For fifteen to twenty people, a 20 passenger party bus does the job. For the larger friend groups this occasion attracts, the numbers in our booking network are telling: among inquiries for 21 to 30 passengers, 98% of the vehicles quoted were party buses, and 89% fell in the matching 21-to-30 seat band. A 24 passenger party bus or 30 passenger party bus is the natural choice, and the ride becomes the first hour of the party.

The second is the organized outing: a senior center, a VFW post, a church social club, a company reward trip. These groups want comfortable forward-facing seats, easy steps and space for walkers, not club lighting. A 36 passenger shuttle bus suits mid-size clubs, and a 56 passenger coach bus with reclining seats is the right call for the longer hauls to New Buffalo or Milwaukee.

A small high-roller evening — six or eight people heading to Rivers for dinner and cards — is a job for a stretch limo or limo Sprinter from our limousine lineup. On-board equipment such as restrooms, luggage bays and sound systems differs by vehicle, so your written quote lists what the assigned one includes.

The rules: 21 and over, IDs and state lines

Casino floors in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin are for adults 21 and over, and they check. Every rider needs a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID — a picture of a license on a phone will not work. One forgotten wallet means one person sitting in a hotel lobby or food court for four hours, so make the ID check part of boarding, before the vehicle leaves the pickup address. Do not bring anyone under 21 on a casino trip, even "just for the ride."

Alcohol on the vehicle is likewise limited to guests 21 and over, where the vehicle's policy permits it. Two of the most popular destinations involve crossing a state line, and open-container rules for passengers in hired vehicles are not identical in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Pacing matters more here than on most outings. A group that drinks hard on the way up may have members turned away at the door, and casinos serve drinks on the floor for hours afterward. Bus-group programs: real, variable and worth a phone call

Many casinos run programs for chartered groups — things like slot-play credits, meal vouchers or a dedicated check-in for bus arrivals. They are real, they can take the edge off the cost of the trip, and they are entirely the casino's to offer, change or cancel. We do not control them and we will not quote them to you. Confirm everything directly with the casino.

Call the property's group sales or motorcoach office a few weeks ahead and ask:

• Do you currently have a bus-group or charter program, and what does it include?
• What is the minimum number of passengers, and is there a minimum length of stay on property?
• Does the group need to register in advance, and does the casino need the transportation company's details?
• Does each guest need a players-club card, and can they sign up on arrival?
• Where should a bus unload and park? Most large casinos have designated bus areas, and drivers may be asked to check in.
• Are there blackout dates around holidays or concerts?

Get the answers in writing if you can, and have your organizer carry the confirmation. Programs often favor weekday and daytime visits, which is one reason senior clubs schedule Tuesday and Wednesday trips.

Also ask about the practical side of arrival: which entrance is closest to bus parking, whether there are wheelchairs or scooters to borrow, and where the group should meet for departure. On a huge, windowless floor, "meet at the bus" is not enough of a plan.

How long to stay, when to book and keeping the budget honest

The most common regret on casino trips is timing: either too short to settle in, or so long that half the group is sitting in the café waiting to leave. Four hours on property is the sweet spot for most groups. Day trips to New Buffalo or Milwaukee can run five or six hours since the drive earns a longer stay. Set the departure time before you arrive, announce it on the bus, and have the organizer send a reminder text thirty minutes ahead. Always do a roll call before leaving.

Your reservation will normally be one continuous block covering the drive, the stay and the return, with the vehicle parked in the casino's bus area. The farther the casino, the more of the cost is simply road time, which is why Des Plaines and Hammond are the budget-friendly picks and New Buffalo and Milwaukee work best with a full vehicle. Tolls apply on several of these routes, including the Skyway and the Indiana Toll Road; ask how tolls and parking are handled in your quote.

Bigger groups plan further ahead, and they need to. In our network, only 21% of inquiries for 21 to 30 passengers and 17% of those for 31 to 40 came in under two weeks out, compared with 26% overall. Larger vehicles are fewer in number, so give yourself at least a month, more around holidays.
