Two Lake Forests, two ways out

For transportation purposes Lake Forest is two towns. East Lake Forest, around Market Square and the Union Pacific North station, uses US-41, the Skokie Highway, reached by Deerpath Road. West Lake Forest, around the Milwaukee District North station near Telegraph Road, is closer to the Tri-State Tollway, with the interchange at Route 60 by the Lake Forest Oasis. Which one your driver uses depends on where in town you are loading and where you are headed.

US-41 feeds the Edens and suits trips to the north side of Chicago, Wrigleyville and Evanston. The Tri-State is the better line to O'Hare, the western suburbs and, often, the Loop when the Edens is jammed. Give yourself 50 to 85 minutes to downtown either way. O'Hare runs 35 to 55 minutes.

Because of the distance, a Chicago night from Lake Forest is a real commitment: close to two hours of the reservation is road time. Lake Forest College, the high school and the academies

School events fill the spring calendar. Lake Forest High School and the private schools in and around town hold proms and formals that often end up at downtown Chicago hotels or North Shore clubs, which means a long ride each way and a late return. For parents, that is the argument for one chartered vehicle over several teenage drivers on US-41 at midnight. Prom and formal rides are alcohol-free. We ask for an adult contact, a rider list and fixed addresses, and the driver does not make unplanned stops.

Lake Forest College adds its own rhythm: commencement in May, homecoming and family weekend in the fall, athletic events, and alumni reunions. Visiting families typically stay at hotels along the Tri-State corridor or in neighboring towns and need a way to reach campus and dinner. For any campus pickup, ask the college where a chartered vehicle may load. Colleges control their own drives and lots, and commencement day usually comes with a traffic plan. The same goes for high school lots on a dance night, which are school property and need permission.

Conway Park offices, client dinners and airport cars

West Lake Forest has a serious corporate address in Conway Park, along the Tri-State near Route 60, and the Chicago Bears' headquarters at Halas Hall is in the same area. Add the offices in neighboring Vernon Hills and Lincolnshire, and weekday demand looks very different from the weekend: executive Sprinters to O'Hare, a shuttle to an off-site, a coach for a company outing to a ballgame or a holiday party downtown.

Midweek is the easy time to book. Fridays and Saturdays absorb most of the demand for group vehicles, so a Wednesday client dinner rarely runs into availability trouble, even on short notice. For airport groups, the Tri-State makes O'Hare a fairly predictable 35 to 55 minutes. Milwaukee's airport is roughly an hour north and worth considering for some itineraries.
