Ravinia nights: how the bus part really works

Ravinia is the reason many people search for a party bus in Highland Park, so here is the plain version. What stays constant is the traffic. On a popular night, Lake Cook Road backs up from the Edens and US-41 exits, and Green Bay Road crawls for the last mile. Arriving 60 to 90 minutes before the music, when lawn groups want to set up anyway, avoids the worst of it. The exit is slower than the arrival, because everyone leaves at once. Agree on a meeting spot and a time with your driver, and expect 20 to 30 minutes to get clear.

US-41 first, then the Edens: getting south from Highland Park

Highland Park's road to Chicago is US-41, the Skokie Highway, which runs along the west side of town with access at Central Avenue, Clavey Road and Lake Cook Road. A few miles south it merges into the Edens. That merge, plus the Edens–Kennedy junction farther down, are the two places your trip is won or lost. Plan 45 to 75 minutes to the Loop on a weekend evening, and don't be surprised by 90 on a bad Friday.

East-side residents sometimes ask about taking Sheridan Road. It is a beautiful drive and a slow one, two lanes with curves through the ravines, and not a practical route for a large bus. Save it for a limo and a photo stop.

O'Hare runs 30 to 50 minutes, usually Lake Cook Road or Deerfield Road west to the Tri-State. That is quick enough that airport transfers for weddings and corporate visitors are routine here. Midway is more than an hour on most days.

Highwood's restaurant row and downtown Highland Park

Not every outing needs the expressway. Highwood, the small city wedged against Highland Park's north side, packs an unusual number of restaurants and bars into a few blocks near its Metra station, and downtown Highland Park around Central Avenue and Second Street adds more. A birthday or a girls' night can start with dinner in one and finish with drinks in the other, five minutes apart, with the vehicle handling the pickups and the ride home.

This is a good use of a smaller booking. A group of 10 to 14, a three or four hour reservation, several home pickups in Highland Park, Deerfield or Northbrook, and no one deciding who drives. Riders must be 21 or older if drinks come aboard, and the restaurant should know a group is arriving together.

Street layout matters here. Both downtowns have angled or parallel parking and narrow through lanes, and Highwood's main street runs right alongside the tracks. A long bus should load on a side street or in a public lot, not double-parked in front of the restaurant. Summer adds the Ravinia overlap: on a big concert night, Green Bay Road through both towns is slow in the early evening, so set dinner for 6 or 8, not 7.

Highland Park High School dances, lakefront weddings and garden events

Highland Park High School's prom and homecoming bring the usual spring and fall rush. These are alcohol-free rides, with an adult named as the contact and pickup and return addresses fixed ahead of time. Photo gatherings often happen at a home or a lakefront park. Both have limited room for a bus, so choose the photo spot with the vehicle in mind and check the park district's rules about commercial vehicles in beach lots. Weddings in this area lean on private clubs, lakefront properties, synagogues and churches, and the Chicago Botanic Garden just south in Glencoe. The pattern is a hotel block along the Edens or Tri-State corridor with shuttles running to the venue and back. Garden and club properties generally direct buses to a specific entrance, so ask your coordinator for the bus instructions in writing.

Fort Sheridan, at the north end of town, is popular for photos on the bluff. The old post's roads are residential now, with tight turns in places. A Sprinter or a limo is the right tool there; a 40 foot coach is not.
