Lake Cook Road is your expressway, for better or worse

The first thing to understand about group transportation from Buffalo Grove is that every route out begins on an arterial road with traffic signals. Lake Cook Road, the county line itself, is the main one. Head west and it meets the top of Route 53, which drops you onto I-90 by Woodfield. Head east and it reaches the Tri-State near Deerfield and, a little farther, the Edens. Dundee Road does similar work along the south side of the village, and Route 83 and Arlington Heights Road run north to south.

Which way a driver goes depends on the destination. For the Loop, United Center, or Soldier Field, it is normally 53 to I-90. For the North Side, Evanston, or anything along the lake, east to the Edens is better. For O'Hare, either Route 53 to I-90 or Milwaukee Avenue to I-294 can win on a given day.

Lake Cook Road carries heavy office traffic from the corporate corridors in Deerfield and Northbrook, and between 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. it can take 20 minutes just to reach an expressway. That is why our drive-time ranges from here are wide: 45 minutes to the Loop late on a Sunday morning, 80 on a Friday evening. Banquet halls, golf clubs, and wedding guest shuttles

Buffalo Grove sits in the middle of one of the region's densest clusters of banquet and golf venues. The village's own Arboretum Club has a banquet facility on its course, the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort is a few minutes north, hotels and banquet halls line Milwaukee Avenue through Wheeling and Lincolnshire, and there are synagogues and churches throughout the area with their own social halls. Weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs are, as a result, the core of what local families book.

Most of those jobs are guest shuttles rather than party rides: move 30 to 50 guests from a hotel block to the ceremony, on to the reception, and back in two waves at the end of the night. Planning starts early for this kind of event. Across wedding quote requests in our booking network, 41% arrived 90 days or more before the date, more than double the rate for inquiries overall, and 45% were for fall dates. September and October Saturdays in the north suburbs are the hardest days of the year to find a bus late.

Ravinia evenings and the Long Grove bridge problem

Two nearby destinations account for a large share of summer requests from Buffalo Grove, and each has a quirk.

Ravinia Festival in Highland Park is 25 to 40 minutes straight east on Lake Cook Road, with no expressway involved. Groups love it because the lawn is a bring-your-own picnic, and a bus means the wine drinkers do not have to draw straws. Half of all concert quote requests in our network are for summer dates, so July and August weekends go quickly. Long Grove, just northwest, is the other favorite: the historic village center with its shops, tastings, and seasonal festivals. The famous covered bridge on Robert Parker Coffin Road has a very low clearance and has been struck by trucks and buses many times. No bus or tall van should attempt it. Drivers approach from Old McHenry Road or Route 83 instead and use the public lots, and on festival weekends the village designates specific areas for larger vehicles. Two counties, two high schools, one busy spring

Buffalo Grove straddles the Cook and Lake county line, and the high school a family attends depends on which side they live on. The Cook County portion is served mainly by Buffalo Grove High School in District 214; much of the Lake County portion attends Adlai E. Stevenson High School in nearby Lincolnshire, one of the largest high schools in the state. For transportation, that means two separate prom and homecoming calendars drawing from the same neighborhoods, and a lot of friend groups that span both.

Stevenson-area groups in particular tend to be large, which pushes them toward 30-passenger party buses and up, the scarcest class on spring Saturdays. Start early, collect deposits from families before you reserve, and appoint one parent as the single point of contact.

Dance trips are alcohol-free, period. The driver will not allow alcohol aboard, bags can be inspected, and an adult must sign the agreement and be reachable throughout. Most parents also ask for a direct route: photos, venue, home. Put that in writing and everyone relaxes.

Beyond school dances, the village's Labor Day weekend festival, Buffalo Grove Days, closes streets and fills lots near the municipal campus, so plan pickups elsewhere that weekend.
