Fermilab visitors: airport transfers and getting through the gate
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory covers a huge tract on Batavia's east side, and it generates a kind of trip most suburbs never see: visiting scientists, conference attendees and university groups who need to get from O'Hare or Midway to the lab and its nearby hotels, then back a week later. The main entrance is on Pine Street off Kirk Road, and Wilson Hall, the tall central building, is the usual destination.
Site access is controlled by the lab, not by the transportation company. Requirements for identification, advance registration and which gate is open to the public have changed over the years, so check Fermilab's current visitor access rules before you travel, and tell us whether your passengers are badged users or first-time visitors. A driver may need to show ID as well.
For the transfer itself, O'Hare is normally 45 to 65 minutes and Midway 50 to 75. Small delegations fit an executive Sprinter van; a full workshop cohort is a job for a coach bus with luggage bays. The quieter Tri-Cities night: River Street, Water Street and the Riverwalk
Batavia does not try to be St. Charles. Downtown is a few walkable blocks on both sides of the Wilson Street bridge: the curbless, brick-paved stretch of North River Street with its restaurants and patios, the Riverwalk and its windmills on the peninsula, and the arts crowd around Water Street Studios on the west bank. For an anniversary dinner, a retirement send-off or a relaxed birthday, that lower volume is the appeal.
It also makes Batavia a smart first stop on a three-town evening. Start here while it is calm, move ten minutes north to Geneva, and finish in St. Charles where the later crowd is. A party bus in Batavia on that kind of night mostly serves as the safe link between towns and the ride home, so a smaller vehicle often does the job. Alcohol on board is for guests 21 and up, and equipment differs by vehicle, so rely on the written quote for what yours includes.

Closest to I-88: Batavia's route to Chicago
Of the three river towns, Batavia sits nearest the Reagan Memorial Tollway. Kirk Road runs south and becomes Farnsworth Avenue at the I-88 interchange, 10 to 15 minutes from most east-side addresses; west-side neighborhoods use Randall Road to Orchard Road instead. That head start is worth ten minutes each way compared with St. Charles.
From the ramp the drive is the familiar one: I-88 east, the Hillside merge onto the Eisenhower, and the final slow miles into downtown. Expect 55 to 70 minutes to the Loop on a weekend evening, up to 85 on a weekday afternoon, and about 50 on the way home after midnight.
Lead time is the other variable. Across all dated inquiries in our national network, 23% were sent 30 to 59 days before the event and another 23% only 14 to 29 days out, which is fine for an ordinary Saturday and risky for prom season, December or a big concert date. When you request a quote, ask how the vehicle's travel time to Batavia and back is handled and whether the day carries minimum hours.
