Kenosha in 20 minutes, Milwaukee in an hour
Look at a map from Zion's point of view and the nearest city is not Chicago. Kenosha's harbor and downtown are 15 to 25 minutes up Sheridan Road. Milwaukee is 45 to 65 minutes by Route 173 to I-94. A baseball game, a brewery tour, a lakefront music festival or a casino night in Milwaukee is a shorter ride than dinner in River North, and the highway north is generally calmer than the Edens.
That makes Wisconsin the natural direction for many trips from here, and it adds one requirement. A trip that crosses the state line has to be set up as one, so tell us the full itinerary when you ask for a quote, so the right vehicle is assigned. Do not add a Kenosha stop on the night.

Illinois Beach State Park: dunes, the lodge and beach weddings
Illinois Beach State Park stretches along the lakefront on Zion's east side, with miles of shoreline, dunes and trails, and a lodge on the beach that has long hosted weddings, reunions and conferences. Hotel operations and event offerings at state park lodges change from time to time, so confirm current availability with the property before you build plans around it.
For transportation, the park is straightforward once you know the rules. Wadsworth Road leads in to the main unit. Lots are big, and buses are not unusual. But it is state property, with posted hours, a gate, and summer weekends when the beach lots fill by midday. Ask the park office or the lodge where a bus may drop and wait, and whether any permit is needed for a group gathering or for photos on the dunes, which are protected.
Wedding guests are usually housed in Gurnee or Waukegan, 15 to 25 minutes away, since lodging in Zion itself is limited. One shuttle making two departures normally covers it. A 24 passenger shuttle bus is a common choice, and older relatives appreciate the low step. Lakefront weather is its own variable: fog and wind off the water can turn a June evening cold, so have the vehicle stay close for guests who want to leave early. The long haul to Chicago
Zion to the Loop is one of the longest suburban runs we quote. The route heads west on Route 173 or south on Sheridan Road and Green Bay Road to reach US-41 or the Tri-State, then follows the Edens and the Kennedy. Plan on 70 to 110 minutes going down in the evening, and a little over an hour coming back after midnight. O'Hare is 50 to 75 minutes. Milwaukee's airport, at about 45 minutes, is closer and worth checking when relatives book flights.
So a Chicago night from Zion needs hours: eight is reasonable, and six is tight. A limo or party bus rental in Zion also involves a vehicle traveling a good distance to reach you, and the quote should state plainly how that time is handled. Ask the question, and compare quotes on the same basis.
Given the mileage, groups here tend to fill the vehicle and split the cost. That matches the broad pattern in our network, where 11 to 20 passengers is the most common group size by a wide margin, and a quarter of those inquiries arrive two to four weeks ahead. Zee-Bee formals, church groups and a town with its own history
Zion-Benton Township High School serves Zion and its neighbors, and prom and homecoming follow the same rules as any school trip: no alcohol, a parent named as the adult contact, and set pickup and return addresses. The state park and the lakefront are the obvious photo spots. Check the park's rules on commercial vehicles and photography first, and leave time for the walk from the lot to the sand. Zion was founded in 1901 as a planned religious community, and that history still shows in its churches and in attractions such as Shiloh House. Congregations are active, and church outings are a steady request: a shuttle to a conference, a youth retreat, a senior group's day trip to Chicago museums or to a show. Where to load in Zion
The street grid
Most of Zion is laid out as a regular grid of numbered and named streets, which makes addresses easy to find and corners easy for a bus to use. Parking on both sides narrows some blocks, so a corner load is quickest.
Sheridan Road
Sheridan Road is the main commercial street and a state route with steady traffic. For a pickup at a business there, use its parking lot or the side street, and keep the group inside until the vehicle arrives.
State park lots
Illinois Beach State Park has large lots, posted hours and a gate. Summer weekends fill early. Ask the park or the lodge where a bus should stage, and do not plan on a vehicle waiting inside after closing time.
Station and church lots
The Metra station at the east end of town and the larger church lots are practical meeting points. Both require permission or attention to posted rules, particularly if cars will be left for a full day.
