Route 47 to the tollway: the long first leg

Woodstock is the McHenry County seat, surrounded by farmland, and the road network shows it. Route 47 runs north and south through town, Route 14 passes diagonally on its way from Crystal Lake to Harvard, and Route 120 heads east to McHenry. The way to Chicago is Route 47 south through open country to I-90 at Huntley, roughly 15 miles and 25 minutes before the vehicle reaches a highway. From that ramp it is still about 45 miles to the Loop.

The Square and the Opera House: brick streets and where a bus fits

The Woodstock Square is the reason people visit: a park with a bandstand, ringed by brick-paved streets and 19th-century buildings, with the Opera House and its tower rising over one side. The Opera House has been a working theater since the 1890s and still runs a full calendar of music, plays and comedy. Restaurants, a small cinema and shops fill the other sides, and the Metra station is a short walk to the north.

It was laid out for horses and wagons. The streets around the park are narrow, lined with angled parking, and busy on market days and show nights. A limousine or Sprinter can circle, stop briefly by a restaurant or the Opera House door and move on. A 35 or 40 foot bus is better kept off the brick entirely. Load on one of the wider streets a block away, or at the station lot, and walk in. The walk is two minutes and the photos are better for it.

Inbound groups are a real part of the business here. Clubs, retirement communities and families from the suburbs come out for a matinee and lunch, or for a day of sightseeing that takes in the Square and the countryside. Groundhog Days: a small-town festival with a national following

The 1993 film Groundhog Day was shot in Woodstock, with the Square standing in for Punxsutawney, and the town has celebrated the connection ever since. Around February 2 each year, Woodstock Groundhog Days offers several days of events: a prognostication ceremony on the Square early on the morning itself, walking tours of filming locations, screenings and themed dinners. The schedule is set by the organizers, so check the current program before building a trip around it.

Transportation for it has two quirks. The main ceremony happens around sunrise, in a northern Illinois winter, so a group coming from the suburbs or the city leaves in the dark, and the Square is closed to vehicles while the crowd is there. A bus should drop several blocks out, and everyone should dress for standing still in the cold. A warm vehicle waiting afterward is a large part of the appeal.

The second quirk works in your favor. Early February is the slowest stretch of the year for group transportation. The McHenry County Fair is held at the fairgrounds in Woodstock in summer, traditionally early August, and brings heavy traffic to Route 47 and Country Club Road for the week. Check dates if your event overlaps, because a pickup on the east side of town will take longer than usual.

Woodstock High School and Woodstock North High School hold their own homecoming and prom dances. Prom venues may be a good distance away, so families should think about hours early and keep groups on one vehicle if they can.
