Logan Square does not have a strip. Its bars and restaurants are scattered along two miles of Milwaukee Avenue from Western up past the Logan Square Blue Line station, along Armitage and Fullerton, and around the boulevards, the broad tree-lined parkways of Logan, Kedzie and Humboldt that meet at the eagle-topped Illinois Centennial Monument. The distance between two good stops might be a mile, which is why this is one of the few Chicago nightlife districts where a vehicle adds real value even for locals.

The character is cocktail bars, breweries and chef-driven restaurants with a neighborhood crowd. Longman & Eagle and Lula Cafe have anchored the dining scene for years. The Whistler pairs serious cocktails with live jazz and DJs. Scofflaw and Billy Sunday draw people who care what is in the glass. The Logan Theatre's marquee lights the middle of it all. It is not a place for bottle service or matching sashes, and groups have the best night when they behave like regulars. Boulevards, service drives and the reworked square

The boulevards look like ideal bus streets, and the central through lanes are. The catch is the service drives. Logan and Kedzie boulevards have narrow one-way side roads along the houses, separated from the main lanes by grassy medians. Those drives are residential, lined with permit parking, and close to bedroom windows. They are not a place to idle a party bus with the sound system on. Load there only for a genuine home pickup, briefly and quietly.

The square itself, where Milwaukee, Kedzie and Logan meet at the monument, has been rebuilt in recent years, with changed traffic patterns and more pedestrian space. Drivers follow posted signage; older map directions and what you remember of the old circle may be wrong.

Good loading spots are the wider commercial stretches: Milwaukee Avenue north of the square, Fullerton, Armitage near Kedzie, and California near the Blue Line stop. Milwaukee's bike lanes are heavily used and must stay clear, as must CTA stops for the 56 and 76 buses. Many brewery taprooms sit on quieter semi-industrial blocks with room along the curb, which makes them the easiest stops of the day.

From downtown or the suburbs, the Kennedy is the front door. The Fullerton, Diversey and California exits all land within a few minutes of the square. Low rail viaducts cross several streets near the expressway, so taller vehicles stick to known routes; leave the navigation to the driver.

The afternoon brewery start

Logan Square and its neighbors hold one of the densest clusters of taprooms in the city, and they open early on weekends. That allows a schedule that does not work in other districts: start at 1:00 or 2:00 p.m., visit two or three breweries while they are calm and the staff have time to talk, eat an early dinner, and finish at a cocktail bar by 9:00.

Hopewell on Milwaukee, Maplewood's brewery and distillery, and Pilot Project are established examples in the neighborhood. Revolution, the city's largest independent brewer, closed its original Milwaukee Avenue brewpub, and its production taproom is on Kedzie in Avondale, a few minutes north. Check every taproom's current hours and whether it takes group reservations. Many have no kitchen and welcome outside food, which is a gift for a birthday organizer with a pizza order.

Daytime also solves the hardest part of Logan Square after dark, which is capacity. Cocktail bars here often seat forty people total. A group of sixteen arriving at 10:30 on a Saturday may not get in; the same group at a taproom at 2:30 has a long table to itself.

Vehicle sizes for small rooms and long blocks

Eight to twelve guests touring cocktail bars fit well in a 12-passenger limo Sprinter. It can make a quiet boulevard home pickup without drawing attention, fits any taproom block, and has limo-style seating so the ride between stops is social.

For a brewery afternoon with fifteen to twenty people, a 20-passenger party bus adds standing room, space for a cooler and growler purchases, and a sound system for the playlist. Pairing Logan Square, and booking at the right time

Logan Square pairs naturally with its neighbors along the Blue Line corridor.

• Avondale, 5 minutes north: More taprooms and restaurants along Kedzie, Belmont and Elston, often with easier parking and loading.
• Humboldt Park, 5 to 8 minutes south: Down Humboldt Boulevard or California for Puerto Rican restaurants near Division.

• River North, 20 to 25 minutes: For groups that want to end on a dance floor.

On timing, nightlife planners in our network tend to book late. About a quarter of nightlife inquiries, 26%, arrived 14 to 29 days before the date, and only 9% came in 90 or more days ahead.
