Twenty miles from any expressway: three ways to the city

McHenry is a river town at the junction of Route 120, which runs east and west as Elm Street, and Route 31, which runs north and south. Those two roads carry nearly everything, and neither is fast. The closest expressways are all about 20 miles off: I-90 to the south at Elgin, the Route 53 freeway to the southeast beyond Lake Zurich, and I-94 to the east near Gurnee. A party bus leaving McHenry spends 30 to 40 minutes on two- and four-lane roads before it reaches any of them.

Which one depends on the destination. For the Loop, the West Loop and O'Hare, most drivers go south on Route 31 to Crystal Lake, then Randall Road to I-90. For Wrigley Field, Lincoln Park and the North Side, Route 120 east to Route 12 and down to Route 53 is often better. For Gurnee, Waukegan or the North Shore, Route 120 east all the way to I-94 is the natural road.

Realistic times are 75 to 110 minutes to downtown Chicago and 60 to 85 to O'Hare. Summer Fridays are the slowest, when weekend traffic bound for the lakes and Wisconsin fills Route 12 and Route 120 in the opposite direction from the commuters, so both directions are busy. Boat days: marinas, the Chain O'Lakes and a driver who stays ashore

From May to September, the Fox River and the Chain O'Lakes to the north are the reason people come to this corner of Illinois. Groups rent pontoons, charter larger boats, or spend the day moving between the waterfront bars and restaurants that boaters tie up at. It is a natural fit for a bachelor party: across bachelor party inquiries in our national booking network, 45% were for summer dates and 19% for August alone.

The bus is for the part of the day that happens on land. The group rides together from home or a hotel to the marina, the driver stays ashore, and afterward a dozen sunburned, tired people are taken home or on to dinner without anyone driving. Remember that the person at the helm is covered by boating-under-the-influence laws, so the boat needs its own sober operator or a hired captain.

Some practical points. Marina lots are tight and full of trucks with trailers, so ask the marina where a bus may unload, and do not expect it to wait by the dock. Bring towels and dry clothes, because wet swimsuits and upholstery do not mix, and the quote may include a cleaning charge for it. The districts are close enough to walk between, so for a local evening the vehicle is mostly about arriving and leaving. Groups from Johnsburg, Wonder Lake, Lakemoor and Woodstock use a Sprinter or small bus to come in together, spend three or four hours on foot and ride home. Where the bus stops matters. Green Street and Riverside Drive are narrow, with parking on both sides, and the Route 120 bridge between them is nearly always busy. Ask to be dropped on a side street or in a public lot near the Riverwalk instead of at the door, and choose one pickup spot for the end of the night.

Fiesta Days and other summer dates to plan around

McHenry's big annual event is Fiesta Days, a long-running July festival with music nights at Petersen Park, a parade and events downtown spread over about a week. The parade closes part of the central street grid for several hours, and concert nights fill the roads around the park on the north side. If you are visiting for the festival, a bus is a sensible way to bring a group from Crystal Lake, Woodstock or the Lake County side, because parking near the park is limited. Ask the organizers where buses and shuttles should drop. Other summer dates matter as well. Independence Day fireworks over the river and the lakes bring heavy boat and road traffic. Holiday weekends put Wisconsin-bound traffic on Route 12, Route 31 and Route 120 from Friday noon onward. And on any hot Saturday, the roads to the state parks and boat launches are slower than the map suggests.

The quiet season has its own appeal. From November to March vehicles are easier to get, which suits holiday parties and winter birthdays.

Weddings on the water, McHenry High dances and the long ride question

Weddings here lean toward the water and the woods: riverfront restaurants and banquet rooms, golf clubs, and outdoor ceremonies near Moraine Hills State Park or on the Chain. Guests often stay in Crystal Lake or along Route 12, where there are more hotel rooms, so shuttles run 20 to 30 minutes each way. For venues on narrow lake roads, a mid-size shuttle is more practical than a coach, and a 22 passenger shuttle bus making two runs often beats one large vehicle that cannot turn around.

McHenry High School's homecoming and prom bring the usual spring and fall requests. Student trips are alcohol-free, a parent is the contact on the agreement, and adults should see the schedule. With prom venues often 30 minutes or more away, keep the group on one vehicle and leave room in the timing for photos by the river.

Then there is the distance. A night in Chicago from McHenry means about three hours of riding, so a five to seven hour block is realistic.
