From that point the trip into Chicago is the familiar one: I-88 east to the Eisenhower, with the merge at Hillside deciding whether you arrive in 40 minutes or 70. Drivers heading to the North Side sometimes stay on I-355 north to I-290 and cut across on the Kennedy instead. O'Hare is an easy reach by that same northern route, generally 30 to 45 minutes.

The stretch people underestimate is the first one. Roosevelt Road between Main Street and I-355 is lined with shopping centers and stoplights, and at 5 p.m. it can take a quarter of an hour by itself. Route 53 on the east side of the village carries much of the north-south traffic for this part of the county and slows to a crawl at the same hour. Put your real departure time into the route time estimator, then add the stoplight leg before you promise a restaurant you will be on time.

Lake Ellyn: the Fourth of July, football Fridays, and the boathouse

Lake Ellyn Park is a few blocks northeast of downtown, a small lake in a bowl of hills with Glenbard West High School on the rise above it. The park's boathouse hosts showers, rehearsal dinners, and small receptions, the village's Fourth of July fireworks are launched here, and on fall Friday nights the football field beside the water draws a crowd that parks on every surrounding street.

All of that makes the lake a wonderful backdrop and a poor place to bring a 40-foot bus without a plan. The streets that ring the park are residential, hilly, and tight when cars line both sides. For a boathouse event, a 20 passenger shuttle bus making two trips is often easier to position than one large vehicle, and the park district can tell you where a bus may stop. On the Fourth, road closures and foot traffic around the park build through the evening.
