The Loop theater district, house by house

Most of Chicago's big stages sit within a few blocks of one another in the Loop, which is convenient once you are there and congested while you are arriving. The Broadway In Chicago houses are the core: the Cadillac Palace Theatre and the James M. Nederlander Theatre on Randolph Street, the CIBC Theatre on Monroe, the Auditorium Theatre on Ida B. Wells Drive at Michigan, and the Broadway Playhouse up at Water Tower Place on the Magnificent Mile. The Goodman Theatre is on Dearborn just off Randolph, and the Chicago Theatre, with its famous marquee, is around the corner on State Street.

Two institutions anchor the edges. The Lyric Opera House stands on Wacker Drive at Madison, along the river, where Wacker's two levels and the bridge traffic make timing matter. Symphony Center, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is on South Michigan Avenue across from the Art Institute.

None of these buildings has a private driveway. Drop-offs happen at the curb on working downtown streets with bus lanes, bike lanes, loading zones and, before a sold-out show, a line of cars all trying to do the same thing. Randolph between State and Wells is the worst of it around 7:00 p.m. A driver who knows to unload on the near side of the street, or a half block short of the marquee, saves you ten minutes of creeping. Curtain times are the one deadline that will not move

A restaurant will hold a table fifteen minutes. A theater will not hold a curtain. Evening performances in Chicago most often begin at 7:00 or 7:30 p.m., with some at 8:00; matinees typically start at 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Always read the time on your actual tickets, because schedules differ by production and by day of the week. Latecomers are generally held in the lobby until a suitable break — at the opera or the symphony, that can mean missing an entire first act or movement.

Aim to be at the door thirty to forty-five minutes before curtain. That allows for security screening, will-call, coat check, restrooms and finding seats in a large house, all of which take longer with a group.

Then work backward. For a 7:30 curtain with dinner first, a 5:00 or 5:15 p.m. table gives you an unhurried meal and a ride with margin. West Loop restaurants along Randolph's restaurant row are a short drive from the theaters; Loop and River North restaurants are closer still, and many offer pre-theater menus designed to get you out on time. Tell the restaurant you have a curtain when you book.

Weeknight performances add a wrinkle: a 7:00 p.m. curtain means traveling into the Loop during the evening rush. Limousines for date nights, Sprinters for small parties

Theater is a small-group occasion. Closest to it in our booking network's data are concert and live-show inquiries, where 41% were for ten passengers or fewer, and among inquiries quoted a limousine, 81% were for groups of one to ten. An anniversary couple, two couples sharing a night out, a family taking grandparents to a holiday show — that is the typical theater reservation.

For those groups a stretch limousine suits the mood. A 10 passenger black Lincoln limo or a 12 passenger black Chrysler 300 limo is quiet, dressy and low-key in the right way. If anyone in the party would find it hard to slide into a low stretch in formal clothes — older relatives especially — choose a 10 passenger executive Sprinter van instead: upright entry, forward-facing seats and a calmer ride. Client-entertainment groups and donor outings often prefer the executive Sprinter for the same reasons.

A party bus is the right tool for a larger celebratory group — a milestone birthday built around a big musical, say — and a 20 passenger party bus works well when the evening continues afterward. Just match the vehicle to the tone: opera patrons may not want club lighting on the way to Wacker Drive, so ask what the assigned vehicle's interior is like. Matinees, senior groups and school field trips

Group sales are a large part of Chicago theater, and the groups who use them are not the ones a party bus is designed for. Senior living communities, park district clubs, church groups and schools book blocks of matinee seats, and they need practical transportation: easy boarding, a seat for everyone and a driver with a clear plan for a crowded downtown curb.

For twenty to thirty passengers, a 24 passenger shuttle bus or one of its larger siblings is the usual answer. For a full grade level or a large community group, a 56 passenger coach bus keeps everyone on one vehicle. If any riders use wheelchairs or cannot manage steps, say so when you request the quote — accessible vehicles are limited and have to be arranged in advance — and contact the theater's access services about seating and the best entrance.

Senior groups should plan for a slow, unhurried unload and a meeting point inside the lobby rather than on the sidewalk. Build in extra time after the show as well; an audience of two thousand exits slowly, and nobody should feel rushed down a staircase.

School trips come with firm rules: no alcohol on the vehicle under any circumstances, a chaperone plan with named adults responsible for specific students, and a headcount at every boarding. Student matinees often start in the late morning, which means traveling at the tail of rush hour. Beyond the Loop: Steppenwolf and the neighborhood stages

Some of Chicago's most respected theater happens outside downtown. Steppenwolf Theatre is on Halsted Street in Lincoln Park, just north of North Avenue, with restaurants on Halsted and Armitage that make an easy pre-show dinner. Halsted there is a busy two-lane street, so drop-offs are quick curbside stops, and a smaller vehicle has a clear advantage. Suburban audiences have strong options too: Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace, the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Paramount Theatre in downtown Aurora and Writers Theatre in Glencoe all draw groups. Those venues usually have their own parking areas, which simplifies loading considerably, and a reservation for a suburban show is often shorter than a trip to the Loop.

Wherever the stage is, the reservation is usually one continuous block: pickup, optional dinner, the performance, and the ride home, with the vehicle staged legally nearby during the show. Most plays and musicals run two to three hours including intermission; operas can run longer, so check the running time when you request your quote.
