One Terminal, Three Concourses, and a Compact Curb

Midway group transportation is simpler than the O'Hare version in one important way: there is a single terminal. Concourses A, B, and C all feed the same building, with ticketing and departures on the upper level and baggage claim and arrivals below. Nobody in your party can end up in the wrong terminal, and the walk from most gates to baggage claim is a matter of minutes.

The flip side of a compact airport is a compact curb. The terminal roadway runs off Cicero Avenue, and at busy times it is crowded with cars, taxis, rideshares, and hotel shuttles. Commercial vehicles are directed to designated pickup areas, and the locations differ for vans, limousines, and buses. Since the airport adjusts those assignments from time to time, your dispatcher will send the current pickup instructions for your vehicle type shortly before the trip. Vehicles are held away from the curb and called forward, so the routine is the same as at any large airport: collect bags, gather everyone at one spot inside, and only then call the driver.

For departures, vehicles drop on the upper level. The security checkpoint is centralized, which makes it easy to keep a group together, though it also means early-morning lines can build quickly.

How Southwest-Heavy Schedules Shape Group Pickups

Midway is dominated by Southwest Airlines, with a handful of other carriers alongside. That shapes how groups arrive.

Because Southwest flies to Midway from dozens of cities all day long, a reunion or bachelor party tends to trickle in: two people from Denver at 11:20, four from Nashville at 12:05, the rest from Dallas at 1:15. Build an arrivals list with the airline, flight number, and scheduled time, then look for clusters. If most of the group lands within about 75 minutes, one vehicle and a patient first wave is the best plan. If arrivals are spread over four hours, schedule two runs or let the outliers take the Orange Line or a cab.

When one airline operates most of the board, disruptions tend to hit everything together. A line of summer thunderstorms or a winter ground stop can delay most Midway arrivals at once, so ask the operator how flight delays, grace periods, and waiting time work, and have it confirmed in the written quote.

The schedule also starts early. First departures leave around dawn, which puts hotel pickups at 3:45 or 4:00 AM for groups from the northern suburbs. Decide who is responsible for wake-up calls.

Groups here skew small. Across our booking network, 28% of inquiries with a usable passenger count were for one to ten people, and that band is the most last-minute we see: 38% of those requests arrived under two weeks out, and just 10% came in three months or more ahead.

The Stevenson, Cicero Avenue, and Getting Downtown

Midway sits about ten miles southwest of the Loop, and nearly every trip downtown uses the Stevenson Expressway (I-55), reached by driving a couple of miles north on Cicero Avenue. In light traffic the run to a Loop or River North hotel takes 25 to 30 minutes. At rush hour, 45 to 60 minutes is common. The Stevenson is congested inbound in the morning and outbound in the afternoon, and it slows where it meets the Dan Ryan and again at its eastern end at DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Cicero Avenue itself is a busy commercial strip with a long series of traffic signals and railroad overpasses, so the first two miles can take longer than the map suggests.

One real advantage: McCormick Place stands at the east end of the Stevenson. Convention groups flying into Midway can be at the convention center or the hotels beside it in roughly 20 to 35 minutes, often quicker than reaching the Loop. The South Loop, Soldier Field, and the Museum Campus share that benefit.

For West Loop, United Center, or Fulton Market destinations, drivers may choose other routes depending on conditions, and that call is best left to the driver on the day.

For outbound trips, use the route time estimator for a base figure, then plan to reach the airport two hours before a domestic flight, with extra margin before 8:00 AM when the checkpoint is busiest. Being ten miles from downtown tempts people to cut it close. With a group, do not.

South and Southwest Suburbs: Midway's Home Territory

For much of the region, Midway is the home airport, and group trips from these suburbs are short.

Oak Lawn, Burbank, and Bedford Park are 10 to 20 minutes away by way of Cicero Avenue or 95th Street. Orland Park and Tinley Park are typically 30 to 45 minutes via Cicero, Harlem, or La Grange Road, depending on the driver's read of traffic. Wedding venues, banquet halls, and the amphitheater in Tinley Park make these common destinations for arriving guests. Farther out, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Plainfield, and Joliet are straight down I-55, generally 35 to 60 minutes, and the I-294 Tri-State links Midway to Oak Brook and the western suburbs.

Families here often use group transportation for departures rather than arrivals: a dozen relatives heading for a cruise or a destination wedding, leaving from one house with a pile of luggage. That is an ideal job for a single shuttle bus. Everyone leaves together, no one pays for a week of airport parking, and the bus is scheduled for the return flight.

The hotels clustered near 65th Street and Cicero serve early flights and airline crews. They are handy for a group with a dawn departure, but they are a long way from downtown dining and nightlife, so groups staying there for an event often book an evening vehicle as well. Tell the dispatcher which hotel, because several in the cluster have similar names.

Picking the Vehicle and Comparing the Cost

Midway transfers are usually short, one-way, and luggage-heavy, so choose accordingly.

For up to eight or nine travelers with suitcases, a 10-passenger executive Sprinter van or the larger 14-passenger executive Sprinter keeps everyone in forward-facing seats with space for bags. From about ten to twenty-five travelers, look at a 28-passenger shuttle bus or something close to it, and ask about the luggage area. For tour groups, teams, and convention delegations, a full coach with under-floor bays is the right tool. The written quote should state the assigned vehicle's luggage capacity and equipment, since both differ between vehicles.

Celebration groups are the exception. If a bachelorette party is landing with weekend bags and heading straight to River North, a limo Sprinter or party bus can make the transfer part of the weekend, as long as you choose one with seats to spare. Drinking on board is only for passengers 21 and over and depends on the vehicle and operator policy.
