Lake Street and Army Trail Road: how you leave Bloomingdale
Two east-west arterials define the village. Lake Street, which is U.S. 20, crosses the north side past Old Town, and Army Trail Road crosses the south side past the former Stratford Square mall property, which is being redeveloped. Bloomingdale Road and Gary Avenue connect them. Any party bus rental in Bloomingdale starts with a decision between those two roads, because both lead east to I-355 and I-290 in Addison, roughly ten minutes away when traffic cooperates.
Once on the expressway the destinations open up. Downtown Chicago is 40 to 70 minutes by I-290 and the Eisenhower. O'Hare is 25 to 40 minutes. Schaumburg, Woodfield, and the convention center are only 15 to 25 minutes north by Gary Avenue or Roselle Road, which is why so many evenings from Bloomingdale point northwest instead of toward the city. The Elgin-O'Hare tollway, a few miles north through Roselle, is a useful alternative for trips toward Itasca and the airport's west side.
The slow spots are local. Army Trail Road between Gary Avenue and I-355 is one of the busier suburban arterials in DuPage County, with a stoplight at every shopping center, and Lake Street narrows through Old Town. Golf outings and clubhouse receptions
Golf is the local specialty. Bloomingdale Golf Club, the village's own course, has been here for generations and runs a steady schedule of outings and banquet events. Medinah Country Club, host of major championships and a Ryder Cup, is immediately east of the village line. Within 20 minutes are public and private courses in Itasca, Roselle, Glendale Heights, Carol Stream, and Schaumburg.
An outing is a transportation problem dressed up as a day off. Twelve to twenty players, a bag each, a morning shotgun start, drinks at the turn, and dinner afterward is precisely the day nobody should drive home from. Old Town, school dances, and where evenings go
Old Town Bloomingdale, at Lake Street and Bloomingdale Road, is the historic center: a few blocks of shops, restaurants, and a park that hosts village events through the summer. It is pleasant and it closes early. With the mall property on Army Trail Road in the middle of redevelopment, plans for that area are still taking shape, and for now a night out from Bloomingdale generally means leaving it.
The good news is how close the options are. Schaumburg has the largest concentration of restaurants and entertainment venues in the northwest suburbs. Rosemont is 25 to 35 minutes for arena concerts and the casino in Des Plaines; confirm current details with the casino. Roselle and Itasca, just north, have Metra stations on the Milwaukee District West line if friends are arriving by train, since Bloomingdale has no station of its own. Addison and Carol Stream are neighbors on either side.
Most Bloomingdale students attend Lake Park High School in Roselle, and some addresses feed the Glenbard schools, so dance groups nearly always span two or three towns. Choose one host house, set the rider list early, and remember the rules for student trips: no alcohol, a parent as the named contact, a route fixed ahead of time. Subdivision streets and courts
