A Bulls Crowd Is Not a Hawks Crowd

The Bulls and Blackhawks share a building and a season, but the groups we hear from are noticeably different, and a Bulls game day party bus plan should reflect that.

Basketball draws the broadest mix in Chicago sports. A typical Bulls group might be a 30th birthday, a sales team hosting clients, visitors who want to see the Jordan statue, a youth basketball program, or three generations of one family. Many riders are casual fans. Some are children. Basketball is also the shortest night. Tip-off is usually 7:00, the game runs about two hours and fifteen minutes, and there is no anthem ritual or overtime culture to plan around, though you will want to be seated for the lights-out player introductions. Dinner First: Building the Night Around a 7:00 Tip

The United Center sits about a mile west of the densest restaurant district in the city, and that is the single best reason to bring a group by bus. Nobody wants to park twice.

Randolph Street and Fulton Market. Girl & the Goat, Au Cheval, The Publican, Green Street Smoked Meats and dozens more are within a five-minute drive of the arena. Large-party tables at the well-known restaurants need to be reserved weeks ahead, and game nights are busy. Book a 4:45 or 5:00 seating, tell the restaurant you have a 7:00 tip-off, and ask for the check when the entrees arrive.

Little Italy. Taylor Street, just south of the Eisenhower, is a quieter alternative with old-school Italian rooms that handle groups of 15 to 25 well, often with family-style menus that simplify the bill.

Loading. West Loop curbs are crowded with valet stands, delivery trucks and rideshare cars. The driver will look for a legal loading zone close to the restaurant rather than the front door, so expect a walk of half a block. Leave the restaurant by 6:15. The drive is short, but Madison, Ashland and Damen all slow down in the hour before the game, and security lines peak at 6:40.

Weeknights, Weekends and the NBA Calendar

With 41 home dates between late October and April, the Bulls give you more choice than any other team, and the day you choose affects the plan more than the opponent does.

Youth Teams and Mixed-Age Groups: The No-Alcohol Plan

Basketball is the sport most likely to put kids on the bus. School teams, park-district programs, AAU squads and birthday parties for ten-year-olds all book Bulls outings, and they need a different set of rules from an adult night out.

No alcohol aboard, for anyone. When the trip is a youth event, the vehicle is dry, including for the adults. When a few minors are part of an otherwise adult group, such as a family party, talk to us about it in advance; the simplest and safest approach is still an alcohol-free ride.

Named adults. A youth trip needs chaperones, and a good ratio is one adult for every five or six children. Ending time. A 7:00 game on a school night ends near 9:20, so a group from the suburbs may not be home before 10:30. Weekend and holiday matinees are kinder to everyone.

After the Buzzer: Leaving, Budget and Avoidable Mistakes

NBA crowds start leaving earlier than hockey crowds, especially when the score is lopsided, so the exit is spread out, but the lots around the arena still take 20 minutes or more to clear. Have the bus meet you a few blocks away instead of in the line of cars, and choose the side that faces your route home: south toward the Eisenhower, or east toward the Kennedy and downtown.
